At a particle physics event, Giovanna Cottin, associate researcher at the SAPHIR Millennium Institute and academic at the Physics Institute of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, presented a study on axion like particles and how to potentially discover their half-life at the LHC.
The workshop, specialized in particle physics, one of the central themes of the SAPHIR Millennium Institute, was held at the prestigious University of Tokyo, in the Masatoshi Koshiba auditorium, named after the Nobel Prize winner in Physics. In this instance, the researcher was the only representative of a Latin American university. "The fact of being the only representative of a Latin American university represents that in Chile we are researching cutting-edge topics, aligned with the international community in particle physics", said the researcher.
On the other hand, although this was not Giovanna's first visit to Japan, the trip allowed her to reconnect with colleagues from the Long-Lived Particle (LLP) community, of which she has been a part since 2016. "It has been a very rewarding experience to be able to reconnect with colleagues from the LLP community," commented the researcher, highlighting the importance of these international networks for the advancement of science.
Participation in this type of event broadens the horizons of Chilean researchers and strengthens international collaboration ties.
