Master's student from the Universidad de la Serena, participated in a one-month stay at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN).CERN) in which she was able to work in the Scattering and Neutrino Detector of the LHC. LHC or SND@LHC.

Sebastián Infante has a degree in Physics and is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Physics at the Universidad de la Serena (ULS). (ULS). His university career led him to work with researchers who are part of the Millennium Institute SAPHIR, such as Orlando Soto, who is also an academic at ULS.

As a result of his interest and curiosity in science, he was looking for opportunities to put his knowledge into practice. In this way, he was able to stay at CERN to work for a month in functions related to the experiment Scattering and Neutrino Detector SND@LHC.

The project focuses on the study of neutrinos, fundamental particles with no electric charge and extremely small mass. During this process, he says that he was able to "participate in the SND collaboration, specifically in the test beam and data collection. test beam and data collection, on the other hand, I was also able to participate in SND shifts, which basically consisted in the study of neutrinos. which basically consisted of performing a process to digitize the data".

Impressions after the stay

In addition to working with people from diverse backgrounds and professions, the young master's student highlights the ability to transfer knowledge: "it was a very good experience, where people were willing to teach me a lot of things that I was unaware of and I am very grateful for that".

He also values the work environment that fosters a "culture of respect, trust and cycling; where I could cycle to CERN and back to my accommodation enjoying the views and the weather".

Finally, Sebastián invites young people who want to follow the path of science to "make an effort and not be afraid to talk to teachers to start working on a project. There is always a lack of hands and the great majority of researchers are willing to work with students and, in this way, give them opportunities to begin to develop in the environment".
