Sebastian is a plastics and metal tooling technician with vast experience in the construction of parts for scientific projects developed at the SAPHIR Millennium Institute.

As part of the technical team, he is in charge of operating the CNC (computer numerical control)machine.computer numerical control)machine, which by means of a manufacturing processstractive" manufacturing process removes layers of material to produce a customized part.

During the summer season, Sebastian traveled to CERN and spent three months at CERN working as mechanical support for the upgrade process for the SND project, located in the TI18 sector of the LHC.

"For me to work in the LHC facilities, 85 meters underground, is something unthinkable and gratifying. To know that a detector, in which I worked, is installed and working hand in hand with the largest particle accelerator in the world; it is something incredible," he said.

About the experience

Although spending a season abroad has its advantages, our team must comply with the objectives and planning outlined for the project, which is not without its complications.

"The challenges involved are always working at 200% because these detectors and every single thing that is installed in the LHC can only be upgraded, repaired or installed in certain months of the year. This means, if something goes wrong, we have to wait a long time to be able to repair or fix whatever has happened so that everything comes out correctly," he explained.

On the other hand, those who go to the European organization have the possibility of staying at the CERN Hotel, which is located in buildings 38, 39 and 40. "Whenever I travel, my stay is at the CERN hotel (building 38), for me it is a pleasant experience, since there is the possibility of sharing with other users in the common areas of the hotel," said Sebastian.

A curious fact about these accommodations is that, although the buildings mentioned are located in Switzerland, another of their accommodations - the Saint-Genis Hostel - is located in France. You can get to know them at this link.
